The Leeds & District Children's Camp runs for disadvantaged children, such as children with ill family members, young carers or those who's family simply can't finance a holiday. It is an annual camp, which caters for boys and girls aged 8-13.
The camp caters for 60 children and takes place during August. Throughout the week the children are divided into teams and go out on trips together. The children then return to the campsite for tea and then compete against each other in teams at different sports events, which culminates in a prize-giving ceremony at the end of the week.
We feel our camp is unique as it still operates all under canvas. Everything from the children's sleeping area to the cooking and dining areas are under canvas. As you can imagine, the weather is of vital importance to us when camp approaches. Thankfully, St. Vincent seems to have been keeping an eye on it for us over the last few years.
The camp costs £8,000 a year to run. These funds are raised by people writing to businesses, raffles being held and by private donations, as well as a number of challenging sponsored events. Without these sources of funding, the camp would cease to take place.
